As we gear up for the release of a new album tomorrow from another exciting artist, it feels fitting to pause and shine a spotlight back on “Uncanniness” the hauntingly immersive debut EP from Deepyoon. Released through Plazma Records, “Uncanniness” has had time to settle into the underground scene, where its dark, hypnotic layers and eerie inspirations continue to resonate.

Fueled by a disturbing piece of his environment, Deepyoon’s creative vision for “Uncanniness” draws directly from a large, abandoned hospital in his town, which has been standing, untouched, for over 40 years. The music on this EP reflects the grotesque and foreboding nature of this structure, creating a soundscape that is equally fascinating and chilling.

Concept of the EP

“Uncanniness” digs into the unsettling sensations of dissonance, using layered sounds to evoke a sense of the unknown. Its complex, spatial synth patterns and driving basslines immerses you in a surreal world where everything feels both familiar and off-kilter. Deepyoon crafts these tracks with precision, balancing playful rhythmic elements against the weight of an unsettling atmosphere. Tracks like the title track “Uncanniness” and “Abandoned Place” conjure vivid imagery of the desolate hospital that inspired the EP, with the sharp hi-hats and warped lead synths echoing its eerie halls.

In a recent interview with us, Deepyoon reflected on his approach to this EP:

“The central theme of the “Uncanniness” EP is the cascading effects that fear has on individuals’ minds. Everyone experiences different feelings when encountering the same object or being in the same environment. Similarly, we can listen to the same music and have varied interpretations of it. I kept the beat as minimal as possible to highlight the subtle changes in the main sound, ensuring that each listener will have a unique experience and interpretation.”

The Tracks

The EP’s standout track, “Blood Moon” stems from an unforgettable experience Deepyoon had during an actual blood moon in 2022. The sound design here leans into the surreal, with metallic scrapes creating a distorted voice-like lead—a fitting homage to the night’s unsettling beauty. Meanwhile, “Cryptid” channels the bizarre, as its title suggests, imagining the unknown creatures lurking within the shadows of our world.

Finally, Maxerface rounds out the EP with his remix of the title track, delivering a raw, gritty reinterpretation of “Uncanniness”. His remix amplifies the mechanical rhythms, adding a restless, machine-like intensity to the original’s already tense framework. The remix brings the EP to a close with heightened energy and a dose of chaos.

About Deepyoon

Deepyoon, also known as Paul Yoon (or Paul Bazooka), has gained recognition both in South Korea and internationally for his intricate, genre-spanning productions. Under his new moniker, he channels his focus into techno, presenting it through a reinvigorated lens.

For Deepyoon, techno is not just a genre but a reflection of technological advancement and experimentation. As he puts it:

“Techno is highly experimental and often ahead of its time. Creating techno requires in-depth knowledge of technical aspects beyond basic synthesizer functions. It tells a story through mood, tone, and structure rather than melody, and expresses sounds in unique ways that are not bound by formal conventions.”

This commitment to innovation is vividly embodied in his latest work. The “Uncanniness” EP is a prime example, drawing from the dark, atmospheric qualities of Deepyoon’s surroundings. His music captures the essence of these influences, transforming them into subtle, evolving soundscapes. By weaving sophisticated textures with personal interpretation, Deepyoon crafts tracks that are both meaningful and uniquely distinctive.

To Conclude

Deepyoon’s “Uncanniness” EP takes you on a haunting exploration of the line between reality and the surreal. Each track feels like a journey through a dark, forgotten world where beats pulse beneath layers of dust and decay. Beyond its conceptual depth, Deepyoon himself encourages listeners to find their own meaning within the sounds, making this EP a must-listen for those who crave a more metaphysical and introspective side of techno.
